Itinerary

Day 1 - Broome to Fitzroy Crossing

Setting off from Broome we break en route for morning tea (own expense) before arriving at the township of Fitzroy Crossing. Following a brief town tour we head to nearby Geikie Gorge where we enjoy a picnic lunch. Afterwards we join a memorable 2 hour Darngku Heritage Cruise hosted by local Bunuba Aboriginal Cultural guides (2DKGC/2DKG2C/2DKG3C).

Your guide demonstrates how to make fire with sticks and provides a fascinating view of Aboriginal culture, Dreamtime stories, bush tucker, animal tracks, traditional plant use and cultural practices. Alternatively join the National Park Ranger (2DKG/2DKG2/2DKG3). The cruise takes us down the mighty Fitzroy River through Geikie Gorge, with the chance to spot geological sea fossils, crocodiles, exotic birds and other native animals. From here it's only a short drive to the Fitzroy River Lodge for our overnight stay. Tonight get to know your fellow travellers while enjoying a campfire barbeque dinner prepared by your driver/guide.

Day 2 - Fitzroy Crossing to Broome

After breakfast our adventure takes us along the famous 'Gibb River Road', once used as the main stock route for the region, we stop at Tunnel Creek, an amazing 750 metre long flooded tube tunnel. We take an exciting walk through the tunnel wading through knee to thigh high water in some sections and hear the story of Jandamarra. After a short drive we then stop at Windjana Gorge, regarded as one of the classic features of world geology and a great freshwater crocodile spotting site.

Here we enjoy a picnic lunch before we journey back to Broome, via the historic town of Derby, home of Australia’s largest tides. We then stop for afternoon tea at one of the Kimberley's most famous landmarks the Prison Boab Tree, once used to hold indigenous people. Here we also view Myalls Bore, a 120 metre long trough built in the early 1900\'s used to water up to 500 head of cattle at one time, before arriving back into Broome at approximately 10.30pm

Important

Accessing Tunnel Creek walk involves 20 metres of clambering over boulders and 700 metres of wading through knee to thigh high water (shorts are ideal). Strap on sandals or old sand shoes must be worn through the water to protect from the rocky creek bed. To safely navigate the Tunnel passengers must be able to walk and balance themselves independently on uneven ground. Flashlights and limited footwear is provided.

For 2 hour Darngku Aboriginal Geikie Gorge cruise, all passengers must wear closed in/covered walking shoes. Aboriginal guide is not guaranteed, and National Park Ranger may be substituted.
